is noted for its pale, serene color scheme—creamy white
picked out with light gray, animated by a bold black
and white marble diaper-patterned floor slashed with
broad diagonals in Greek key design. Joseph Rose was
commissioned by Adam to do the elaborate stucco work—
hexagonal medallions in the half dome of the rotunda,
round ones upon the ceiling, where strong diagonals
echo the pattern of the floor. But what is notable about
Adam's orchestration of elaborate surface ornament is
the vast expanses of breathing space, of pure wall, he
permits. Even the famous 20th century avatar of anti-
ornament, Adolf Loos, could not complain about Adam's
judicious, airy use of elaborate adornment! One does
