Casali among them, to execute elaborate ornamental
and figurative schemes in paint. English craftsmen and
artists included the sculptors Joseph Wilton and John
Cheere and the stuccoist Joseph Rose. The result is
a Gesamtkunstwerk of the highest order, herald of the
richness and vitality, for all time, of the Classical world
and its art.
A visit to Syon House commences with the Great Hall,
almost a perfect double cube, 31 by 34 feet, modeled
on a Roman basilica, inspired possibly by Piranesian
proportions, with a half rotunda at the far end. The Hall
