connoisseurs, an art and design Grail on the Grand
Tour. Indeed, Syon is an embodiment, in microcosm,
of the Grand Tour which Robert Adam made in the
1750s culminating in his architectural studies in Italy.
Perhaps no other house in the world so poignantly
and consummately contains the spoils and styles of
at least five major design epochs: the Romantic, the
Picturesque, the Baroque, the Mannerist and even the
Gothic. If eclecticism is the lingua franca of 21st century
design, Syon House is an august reminder that it has
been with us a long time.
