As in the first painting, St. Jerome inhabits a landscape
imbued with all the civility and grace of the Renaissance;
this time we see in the near distance a walled town of
white buildings embraced by a lake and rolling hills.
Piero's version of St. Jerome's vita contemplativa focuses
on its beneficent pleasures: the joys of reading and the
pleasures of fellowship without passionate attachment—
to anyone but God. H
