Culpepper's work is more complex than at first meets the
eye, an evocation of the interior spaces inhabited or visited
by the artist, the ones that flow like tributaries into her subjec-
tive visual experience. Like Matisse's interiors—indeed like his
masterpiece, "The Dessert: Harmony in Red," —they are at
once representative and abstract, consummate compositions
that entice us towards earthly and domestic pleasures. And,
like Warhol's whimsical shoes, they reveal to us the human
hand and spirit—the elan and joie de vivre—at work in the
material world. H
