Take "Table for Two," in which a round table, patterned in
black and white Matisse-like leafy cutouts, takes center
stage. Soup plates and cups suggest a meal hastily
abandoned, or just about to begin. The asymmetric verve of
such an image animates the inanimate. "The Sitting Room"
presents a near-abstract rendering of a small room, in which
swathes of crimson delineate the walls, a sweep of yellow,
the ceiling, all limned in jagged black lines with a delicate
black chandelier dangling above the ensemble. "Dinner Party"
shows a more elaborate table, a banquet set for eight, black
chairs set against the white and pale blue of the table and
mantelpiece, a golden chandelier surmounting all.
