including Sir Peter Lely's painting of Charles I and his
son, the Duke of York. The coved ceiling, inspired by
Raphael's Villa Madama in Rome, was executed by
Joseph Rose and is adorned with Giovanni Cipriani's 239
vividly painted medallions depicting Arcadian figures,
the central ones floating in the firmament. The Adam-
designed carpet, woven at Spitalfields, is in soft hues of
apricot, pink and pale blue. The Red Drawing Room is an
excursion, from the mythos of the preceding chambers,
into a world much more purely English. Royal and family
portraits abound: we see members of the Royal House
of Stuart, and the "Winter Queen," Elizabeth Queen of
Bohemia, sister of King Charles I, among others. Pier
tables and mirror frames were designed by Adam, as
was the white marble chimney piece.
The Long Gallery and the tiny boudoirs at either end,
known as the Turret Rooms, are among the most
