murals of Pompeii. He was commissioned by the Percys
to create a Neoclassical house, and Neoclassical it
was, but with a lightness and animation not heretofore
expressed in the style. Adam himself characterized his
work at Syon as "finished in a style to afford variety and
amusement."
Adam's plan comprised a set of rooms on the main
floor, a domed rotunda with circular inner colonnade
(not built due to lack of funds), five main rooms on the
west, east and south elevations, a pillared Ante-Room,
a Great Hall, grand staircase and a Long Gallery 136
