ust coming up from
Singing Beach, Manchester,
Massachusetts, I told Julia
that I had just built a giant
sandcastle but that I could
not fly a kite because the
wind was coming from the
wrong direction, which led to
a discussion about castles
and dream places to fly
kites. I told her I would love
to fly a kite from atop Fort St.
Angelo, Malta, my favorite
castle, which I had visited
just a few years before as a
schoolboy. "Christopher,"
replied Julia, " I had the
most splendid castle,
with murals of Fort St.
Angelo on the walls
of a large hall." Thus
began
countless
discussions
over
summer lunches
about Caprarola,
eventually shared over
long Campari and sodas—a
drink she introduced to this
then undergraduate.
