or many, gardens can often be written off
as having two functionalities: beautification by
way of flowers and usefulness by way of fruits and
vegetables. Yet the act of gardening is more than
simply weeding and watering; it is a special kind
of dance, a waltz between the wild and unruly
entanglements of nature and the ballet of human
control and perfection. Only the gardening masters
have been able to engage in such a balancing act,
juggling both Mother Earth's organic intention and
humanity's impulse to create symmetry and order.
