In his 1983 essay, "It's Hard to Find a Good
Lamp," Judd described the differences and
similarities of making furniture and making art:
"…the difference between art and architecture is
fundamental. Furniture and architecture can only
be approached as such. Art cannot be imposed
upon them. If their nature is seriously considered,
the art will occur, even art close to art itself."
Judd's words are prophetic. The forms of
furniture he made were focused strictly on
function, and they succeed: art occurs. Take,
for example, the severely beautiful couch/
daybed he designed. Austere as it is, ityet
offers some of what one craves in a couch:
enclosure as well as comfort; it is more berth
than seat. In refining the design of the couch
