residence, Herreshoff Castle, built in 1926 by artist Waldo
Ballard and his wife who intended to recreate Erik the
Red's castle in Greenland. Christopher recalls discussing
the Westward, a half-hull model of which resided in
either Marblehead's Eastern or Corinthian Yacht Club.
The younger Herreshoff, also a noted nautical architect,
felt Westward among the best of his father's designs.
Westward's first owner was Alexander Cochran, "the world's
richest bachelor," who in 1909 commissioned Herreshoff
to design and build a stunning new schooner, sparing no
expense. Cochran sought a schooner capable of crossing
the Atlantic and racing in Europe, and his captain, Charlie
Barr, advised him to visit Herreshoff. The Westward was
made of riveted steel with pine decks over steel plating. Her
masts were of solid Oregon pine, and when the main mast
