kitchens and orphanages, feeding
approximately 230,262 people in
the country. It is one of seventeen
food banks overseen by the
Red Banco de Alimentos. Over
a thousand volunteers donate
their time to obtaining, saving
and donating food that would
otherwise be wasted, i.e. food
from the industrial sector, farms
and supermarkets that is either
surplus, has errors in packaging or
is almost past its expiration date.
The work which volunteers perform
takes place in a warehouse, where
they classify the food donated
by companies and producers,
separating it into bags and
boxes for its ultimate consumers.
Both foundations need donations.
A recent survey conducted by the
Argentine Food Banks Network
determined that 32.2% of the
thousand or more organizations
that work under their aegis have
experienced a fall in their resources
in the last six months, and that
54% have observed an increase
in the demand for food by families
and individuals during that period.
