crafts dealer Ricardo Paz' gallery, Arte Etnico Argentino.
It is the mission of Paz to highlight pieces that exemplify
a uniquely Argentinian identity. In
the 1980s, Paz visited the dry
forest of northern Argentina and
discovered villages of artisans
creating handwoven textiles and
furniture of wood and leather,
crafts which died out when the
forest was cleared to make way
for agriculture. Paz and his
wife, Belen Carballo show these
wares, of a rich rusticity, in an
immense shop that feels like the
interior of a hacienda, with high
ceilings, stone floors and limewashed walls. Miles of textile,
most often in tones of warm red,
create a glow in this interior, some
of them hung on the walls, others
standing in rolls, like rosy pillars.
Some of the more massive, freeform pieces of furniture resemble those of midcentury
designer George Nakashima. This is furniture in which
one discerns, still, the tree. H
