Jose Pereyra Lucena, Moonbathing II La Pampa
A great museum sets the tone for any cosmopolitan city, and
Buenos Aires boasts the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de
Buenos Aires (MALBA). Inaugurated in 2001 and designed
by three young architects from Cordoba—Gaston Atelman,
Martin Fourcade and Alfredo Tapia—MALBA's mission is
to preserve and promote Latin American 20th century and
contemporary art. Any visit to Buenos Aires should begin with
MALBA, where one may see works by Diego Rivera, Frida
Kahlo, Tarsila do Amaral, Wilfredo Lam, Emilio Pettoruti, Xul
Solar, Antonio Berni and Jorge de la Vega, among others.
Overarching the variegated world of Latin American art in the
20th century is the aura of magic realism, an objective style
applied to extra-ordinary, dream-like figures and phantasms.
