Andrew Fisher and Jeffrey Weisman, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
the marche au puces at Clignancourt, sacred fount of
designer finds.
At the same time, there are many foreign-born decorators
working in America who possess houses in their native
lands: Lars Bolander in Sweden, Juan Montoya in
Colombia, Inson Dubois Wood in Thailand, Alessandra
Branca in Italy and Clodagh in Ireland. Such is the pushme-pull-me of Home and Away, the drive to draw on
one's original, ingrained sources, both intellectual and
material, paired, dialectically, with the excitement of an
aesthetic rich and strange. Keith noticed a common
refrain among the decorators she interviewed, namely,
that all of them wished their houses to be "of", not simply
"in" a foreign country.
