not simply to travel, but to move places, is in the enviable
position of drawing atmosphere, inspiration, artifacts,
materials and artisans from foreign lands, ever allowing
the scarlet thread of their own taste to run through the
magic carpet of "abroad."
In contemplating these houses, I think, rather trenchantly,
of the wonderful 1984 Eric Rohmer film Full Moon
in Paris, the story of Louise—an interior decoration
apprentice, naturally—who acquires a room in Paris
far from her suburban apartment and boyfriend. The
maxim which accompanies the film—one of Rohmer's
