they have acquired in the fullness
of time. Indeed, the last fifty to
one hundred years have endowed
these objects, originally made to
shock, with dignity, with a quality
akin to the Japanese attribute of
wabi-sabi: worn beauty, spiritual
longing. If we now take for granted
the equal footing—in the gallery
context at least—of art and applied
art—the pioneer objects on exhibit
from October 24th till December
13th at Blain Di Donna Gallery in
New York remind us that this fragile
parity did not always exist. These
are works made to be mysterious;
