Secret Garden, in which the
Casino stood, trying to find
Julia's special "secret garden",
to no avail. She talked to me
about it and wrote about it,
clearly indicating that she was
not referring to the Casino
and its surrounding garden.
Paths I followed led in various
directions but not one to a
single sequestered clearing that
might bear traces of a fountain.
I will return to search again for
remains of the garden under
the brush. But for now, this
inner sanctum of Caprarola, of
Guiseppe and Julia, remains
elusive.
At the end of Jottings from
Julia's Journal, she reflects on
"…these memories…of days
that exist no more." But for me
they live on, in the memories
she transmitted to me.
