Yet Dutch garden designers
are not simply transforming
public arenas—smaller, quieter
residential spaces deserve the
same treatment in their eye.
"People want to experience
something in their garden,"
says Martin Veltkamp, one of
the world's renowned Dutch
landscape artists. Veltkamp
has mastered the integration of
modernity into his garden designs
by at once creating symmetry
and perfection as allowing the various plants to express
themselves naturally, the juxtaposition of which certainly
creates an "experience" that is entirely unique to the residence.
Though primarily attracted to the "non-color" of green,
Veltkamp creates a vibrant dialogue between the plants
by playing with different textures; cylindrical evergreen oak
trees contrast and complement long, lush grasses. The

Carefully integrated walking paths of gravel encourage
a stroll through the carefully lush surroundings. In fact, it
was Piet Oudolf, a Dutch master garden designer, who so
eloquently laid out the invigoratingly metamorphosing garden
designs for New York City's High Line and Battery Park as
well as countless other public spaces around the globe.
These transformed spaces are not only more beautiful, they
are now gathering grounds for people from all over. These
garden designs go beyond bettering the environment—they
create gateways that ultimately better community synergy.
