As early as 1990, in an interview, Heisel declared her view of graphic pattern, talking about a fabric she designed, in black and white, based on old woodcuts found in a book of Celtic medieval symbols: "We wanted prints but…we found nothing we liked. So we just started looking around…" One can see, from the small, intense cluster of paintings and drawings on Heisel's living room wall, that her sources and influences are informed and far-flung. There is a silk-screened self-portrait of the great Conceptual artist Josef Beuys (himself no stranger to sewing; one of the first works of his I ever saw was HYLAND
