(or terne) roofs were preserved or replaced, and the
massive, projecting stone chimneystacks remain a
feature, with two new chimneys added which match
the original. Like other typical vernacular buildings in
the Middleburg region, the walls of Phantom Fox have
been stuccoed and an ochre limewash introduced,
along with new, red-painted shutters which match the
roofs. New timberwork is unpretentious yet beautifully
detailed, including a pedimented portico: two pairs of
slender Tuscan columns are echoed on each side of
the entrance by engaged columns, with a door frame
incorporating convex reeded pilasters.
