I am quoting Laurence Sterne's Prologue to A Sentimental
Journey through France and Italy, not to allude, as he
does, to amorous adventures—although what I speak of
does involve love—but to the writing, photography and
production of books on the art of design, which in France
have always been well-ordered, accorded a seriousness.
The occasion for my thoughts is an appreciation of
the repertoire of decorative arts studies by French
