primary relationship in life with the land rather than with
other people. We are accustomed to the banal urban
and suburban chatter about "having it all", as if having
were the same thing as being. These women, and most
significantly Lankner herself, prove that the road not taken
by most of us because it is simply too lonely, is often the
one most rewarding and worthy of admiration. Just as
the female ranchers devote themselves to an increasingly
anachronistic way of life and work, so Lankner chooses to
stand by the historic materials and methods of the artist,
those dignified by centuries of use, rather than choosing
the easy way out offered by the digital world.
