Heifer operates with "12 Cornerstones for Just and
Sustainable Development", twelve principles established
by Dan West, the first, and perhaps most important of
which is "Passing on the Gift." This means that a family
who has benefited may, in turn, become a donor for
another in need, a pyramidal structure that constantly
broadens a solid base of prosperity as well as affirming,
for all parties, the meaning of the helping hand. Heifer
summarizes its philosophy thus: "Cornerstones stimulate
group wisdom and personal insights, and they keep
people's hearts, minds and actions balanced, focused
and productive."
Heifer offers a panoply of ways, not only to give, but to get
involved, from donating a baby chick—about $20.00—to
funding an entire project, to visiting one of its campuses
around the United States. Each campus is a learning
center where donors learn about the communities and
countries where Heifer works every day; donors may go
on to launch Heifer informational activities at schools,
youth groups, churches and civic organization.
Emerson, with his credo of Self-Reliance would have
appreciated the ethos of Heifer, which offers a unique
solution to world hunger rather than the bromide of
temporary relief. H
