Gasteau, Ford, Gideon

and others. But in 2000, Davies turned to photography,
first developing a series of amusing multimedia works
featuring doll-like aliens in mundane earthly settings,
then moving to street scenes. "The angst that went along
with painting began to be too much," she explains her
transition. "It started to feel cumbersome: There were
too many supplies; I needed too much space; it was too
solitary. I've always photographed and loved it, so it was
just a matter of changing direction, and the street has
proven to be a great milieu for me."
It has also led to lessons in four-legged sociology.
"New York City dogs who are owned by good people
are extremely social," Davies says. "Maybe it's because
people live in smaller spaces with no yards, or because
there are so many single people here with dogs, but the
result is that our doggies get out more and socialize more.
They have to go on walks, three or four times a day, and
eventually the owners know each other. The dogs have
their pals, too."
