A
dog's life is a cliché with
multiple meanings, most of them
pleasant, if the dog happens to
live in Manhattan. Seven years
ago photographer Sally Davies
set out to capture the savvy and
soul of the city's canine residents
in her blog, The Daily Dog. The
project, which now includes more
than 300 images, led to another
addition to the artist's resume,
that of private pet photographer.
A native of Canada, Davies
gravitated toward the East Village
30 years ago. In the early '90s, she
established herself as a painter,
with shows at the OK Harris
and Gracie Mansion galleries.
Her colorful, tongue-in-cheek
paintings—including a tattoo
series and one devoted to the
auction of Jacqueline Kennedy
Onassis's belongings—popped
up on an episode of Sex and the
City and in Ted Demme's film
200 Cigarettes and appear in the
collections of Harvard Business
