is surrounded by the quintessential Windsor
chair, perceived by this writer as a vernacular
design placed consistently in smart locations
throughout American design history.
The room celebrates a time when citizens, both
great and modest, seemed more immersed in
galvanizing achievement by commissioning
art, in this instance, a splendid suite of silver
that would grace the USS Maryland.
It seems a space fit for daguerreotype
photography, however grand it might be
perceived by modern eyes, the space forms
an aesthetic representative of a time when
government was smaller, a time just on the
cusp of the full swing of Modernism and the
vast endeavors that would follow for the rest of
the 20th century.
Johnson Berman captures the moment
succinctly. H
