A long, stately drive, flanked by gate posts at the entrance,
leads up to the house. The house is surrounded by vast,
manicured lawns which stretch down to an expansive
lake. Several ancillary historic structures punctuate the
property, creating a picturesque, romantic landscape in
which one can wander, enjoying these various garden
landmarks, some of which evoke the 18th century English
predilection for ruins: a pillar here, a pillar there.
The designers' most imposing intervention is the Chinese
red poolside pavilion, composed of tall, massive pillars
joined at the top by gentle arches, and a steeply pitched
roof, Chinese in feeling, of open ribs. Through each
