island of slate—which Scott's
daughter Simone uses as a
chalkboard--surmounted by
a batterie of shining copper
pots.
The color axis of Simone's
bedroom is again red and
yellow, this time with walls
the color of honeysuckle; the
Ming dynasty antique opium
lounger's day bed is tufted in a
light red fabric with matching
rolled bolster. Above the bed
hang a series of Chinese
New Year's children's hats.
The furniture is dark, almost
ebonized, calligraphic, against
the pale shimmering walls.
I mentioned the bathroom.
In it, a very high dado of grey
marble tiles is surmounted by
a pale pollen yellow frieze, all
recessed behind an elongated
shallow arch worthy of
Soane. The tub is of white
sarcophagus form; its spout
is a large gargoyle, formerly a
building ornament, a touch of
mirth in this beautifully solemn
temple to hygiene.
