John's University library, founded in 1870. The English Arts & Crafts designer C.F.A. Voysey thought every fireplace should be crowned by a motto. His own? Where there is trust there is love. A generation ago, Christopher Hyland inscribed the following sentence, meaning "All things are possible," in Latin: Omniae Quae Fieri Possunt. It still resides, painted in oil on canvas below crown molding, an easy method for adding such elements to any room. The room in this case was a three-story tower containing a freestanding staircase. In an ideal global work of performance art, one can imagine five salient quotes to be placed on buildings in Tokyo, Beijing, New Delhi, Kuwait, Moscow, Amsterdam and New York. Simultaneously, artisans would install these quotes, testimony to a global aspiration for understanding. My own choices?
