Second course: foie gras
avid Burke's culinary genius has afforded
me the opportunity to fulfill, however belatedly, albeit in
fantasy only, a task which would have comprised part
of a job I once interviewed for: Chief of Protocol of the
United States of America. I came in second! The interview
in the old Executive Office Building was great fun. The
Washington Post reported the interview in the smallest
article imaginable: but there it was.
We sometimes wonder what might have been. Proust
sought to recapture lost time. But we all, mostly furtively,
ponder the path not taken, the path not opened.
