Interior by Ron Bricke Other celebrated designers recognize the utility of a wellplaced screen in a contemporary environment. Notes Geoffrey Bradfield: "I find there is an exciting synergy which becomes evident the moment one juxtaposes the East with the West. BROOK S. MASON is a 20-year veteran journalist covering the art market, design and the business of art fairs in New York, Paris, London, Basel, Dubai and Moscow. She serves as U.S. Correspondent of The Art Newspaper, has served as the design columnist for artnet.com magazine since its inception and has written extensively for The Financial Times and Bloomberg. Her focus includes the auction world, fairs and collectors in the US, Europe, Russia, Asia and Latin America along with pivotal architects and interior designers. In addition, Mason is a contributing author of The International Art Markets: The Essential Guide for Collectors and Investors (Kogan Page, 2008) now in its second printing and with an edition in Chinese published in 2011. "I've used Asian and specifically Japanese screens in various projects since the beginning of my career," says Paul Wiseman of the San Francisco Wiseman Group. "They work so well in contemporary as well as traditional spaces," he says. Another designer who is keen for the screen is Ellie Cullman of the  decorating firm Cullman & Kravis. "We love using Japanese screens because they add glamour and drama," says Mrs. Cullman. Says Frank J. Webb of White Webb in New York City: "Asian screens provide a rich counterpoint to streamlined interiors. Whether bold or subtle in design, screens  bring a touch of soul to the very rooms they inhabit." H HYLAND
