A building crowned with a dome often suggests a sacred destination, always an august one. A dome, also, in its echo of our planetary shape, possesses a visionary quality; hence, the creations, committed mostly to paper rather than building, of the French neoclassical architects, Boullee and Ledoux. Yet there is also a measure of the primitive about a dome; some of the earliest discovered human dwellings were in the form of domes, notably four small dwellings made of Mammoth tusks and bones found in Mezhirich, Ukraine, dating from 19,280 to 11,700 BC.
