A
building crowned with a dome often suggests a sacred
destination, always an august one. A dome, also, in its echo
of our planetary shape, possesses a visionary quality; hence,
the creations, committed mostly to paper rather than building,
of the French neoclassical architects, Boullee and Ledoux. Yet
there is also a measure of the primitive about a dome; some
of the earliest discovered human dwellings were in the form of
domes, notably four small dwellings made of Mammoth tusks
and bones found in Mezhirich, Ukraine, dating from 19,280 to
11,700 BC.
