Make no mistake, these comments have nothing to do with whether something is beige, grey, purple, orange—although a disproportionate number of the offending concerns favor orange. Courts, libraries, retirement homes, hospitals. Why must these environments be tinted to provoke an emotional tundra, a scorched earth of the mind? Give those amongst us—ill, aged, or on their journey beyond—a sense of comfort and succor. If television is any indication of the future, over the next decade we will be plagued by every interior in the country resembling kinetic neon signs: with that additional component, psychosis will result. False finances, false colors, nonstop kinetic meaningless glare, all indications of a civilization hopelessly immersed in selling something quickly, all in a neon-colored glow so strong one loses sight of the product. One might well demand, "stop the world, I want to get off!" Look to Nature again, her wide range of colors, her variegated greens in one field, the carefully calibrated pinks, yellows and ivories of her roses; the nuanced shades of gray, tan and rust in her minerals; the spectrum of tans, beiges and whites in her beach sand. Look at them, observe them well. Add these nuances to the equation and live harmoniously and serenely with color. Doing so will animate again a more knowing interest in ornamentation as an appropriate sheath for serious buildings, an appropriate mantle for serious activities, of all styles.
