Scott's work reminds me of that of my favorite decorator of all time, the redoubtable, the august, Belgian antiquaire, Axel Vervoordt, Western avatar of the ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy, wabi-sabi, on which he has written a book (see review in HYLAND, Edition 7). Scott, too, is steeped in things Asian, having a studio in Shanghai, where she has completed important projects and being married to the famous Chinese painter, Wenda Gu. Both Scott and Verwoordt create interiors just this side of somber; I prefer to call the atmosphere they achieve reverent. Theirs are serious rooms; only the heart of the foolish is in the house of mirth. Both Scott and Verwoordt employ pale yellows—pollen or amber—and charcoal grey as anchors for their HYLAND
