Best nature work, yes; but Sand Sea Sky is also the
culmination of a great work of conceptual art, for Tria
Giovan exerted monumental patience, orderliness
and method in documenting a mere three-mile stretch
of tide, wind and sand, often on an hourly basis, for
ten years. I am reminded, perhaps improbably, of
conceptual artist Hanne Darboeven's extensive projects
involving handwritten series of numbers derived from
the Gregorian calendar, her 'daily arithmetic', a visual
