Giovan's eye is original and versatile. In her personal
work she has documented the changing interiors,
architecture and personae of Cuba, traveling there a
dozen times between 1990 and 1996. Out of Giovan's
travels came the 1996 book Cuba—The Elusive Island
(Harry N. Abrams), reproducing a hundred of her images,
complemented by a selection of writings by some of
Cuba's most important authors.
In 2012, Giovan completed a very different, yet perhaps
even more personal project: 10,000 images, taken over
a decade, of the beaches of Sagaponack, where Giovan
