footboard of the bed, an austere foursquare surround
upholstered luxuriously. Furnishings, carpets and
curtains are white and mauve, and this discreet ensemble
is topped by a magnificent
Venetian chandelier in palest
turquoise.
The kitchen puts me in mind
of Vienna 1924 more than of
Manhattan 1962. Drake has
distilled the best of all beauty
in the kitchen to create a crisp
china blue and white bandbox
neat composition. Perfect
white mortised cabinets are
complemented by a geometric
pattern on the floor of blue,
white and black tiles.
Finally, the entry hall constitutes
another feat of Drake���s daring
delicacy, for it is colored���
or lit���a rosy pink worthy of
Madeleine Castaing, hung
with a series of lamps. The
pink lampshade contributes to this pink glow; the
assertively Edwardian doors and surrounds, in golden
oak, are endowed, on the ceiling above, with an aura of
HYLAND
