it was one of the tallest buildings in Bangkok at the time and boasted one of the citys first elevators to carry guests up to their rooms or to Le Normandie, a French restaurant on the top floor with sweeping views of the river and city. Le Normandie was an immediate success with both local and visiting admirers of classic French cuisine and has maintained its reputation for more than forty years. Most of the famous three star chefs demonstrated their culinary arts in recent years, the views are as spectacular as ever, and the food still remains the standard against which all other local establishments are measured. Summing up the completion of the work on the two wings, Kurt Wachtveitl, who served as general manager for 41 years, remarked, A graceful lady has been beautifully restored. One of the designers who worked on the project added, We wanted to make necessary improvements without altering the essential spirit, which after all has been such a part of The Orientals appeal. Future guests, both old and new, will agree that this aim has been achieved. Just as it has from the start, The Oriental continues to cast a rare magical spell with its seamless blend of modern comforts and history. H William Warren was born in Albany, Georgia, in the United Sates and since 1960 has lived in Bangkok, where he is a lecturer at Chulalonkorn Univeristy as well as a freelance writer. His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Esquire, Readers Digest Asia magazine and other publications. He is the author of The Legendary American, a biography of Jim Thompson and has provided the text for a number of picture books, among them Bangkok, Seven Days in the Kingdom of Thailand and Thai Style.
