practice various hierarchical structures within each tribe, village and family. Their nomadic slash and burn lifestyle is no longer possible in modern Thailand; today, most Hill Tribes subsist on farming and, to some extent, tourism. Famous among the tribes are the Paduang, or Long-necked Karen, with their tradition of making women more beautiful by ���stretching��� their necks. By continually adding brass rings over time, the neck appears elongated; actually, the collar bone is displaced downward. Other tribe members frequent Chian Mai���s Night Market in full costume offering trinkets, or, for a small fee, the opportunity to take photographs. The gentle swaying roll of an elephant ride is an unforgettable experience. Daily shows in nearby elephant camps feature graceful tasks of agility, remarkable feats of strength, and surprising creativity. In a small arena filled with awestruck viewers, elephants stand next to easels holding paint brushes in their trunks, creating images strangely reminiscent of modern masters, with line drawings of elephants and simple flowers in Picasso���s style, tropical landscapes bold as Gauguin���s and electric abstracts resembling Kandinsky���s. Chiang Mai artisans weave vibrant silks and hand chase silver; craftsmen carve decorative objects from teak or produce lovely celadon ceramics.
