T he goal of the North Shore Land Alliance (NSLA) is to protect actual open space as well as the feeling and qualities of rural living.. This is an ongoing challenge in a region that lies within commuting distance of the New York City metropolis. The Alliance works to protect space at a variety of scales, from the maintenance of small local parks to protecting private tracts of land hundreds of acres in size from excess development. Its emphasis on collaboration with village governments, local citizenry and like-minded organizations belies the groups focus on practical and achievable results. It is neither an extremist environmental group nor is it focused exclusively on aesthetic preservation. Rather, NSLA���s tools for conservation, from bargain purchases of land, its encouragement of outright gifts of land and conservation easements by land owners, as well as volunteer educational outreach programs, reveal an awareness that land is a resource to be enjoyed and used by those in a community within reason.
