R
esort architect extraordinaire Bill Bensley
came to interiors from the outside in. Originally a garden
designer working in Bali, the Harvard-trained Bensley
creates utopias out of the already idyllic topos of Thailand.
His hotels, spas and houses are rooted in context: natural,
historical, ecological. On the other hand, Bensleys design
motto is the odder the better, a sentiment appropriate
in the land of spirit houses, where the unforeseen, the
unexpected plays a part in even the best-laid plans. He
considers resorts to be the perfect architectural and
decorative project because they embody pure escapism,
and are not subject to unruly additions by clients; they
are immune to the mess of everyday life.
