Hotel, which had been built on the site of an older hotel
of the same name that dated from the 1870s.
It was the social event of the year, perhaps of the decade,
for it meant that at last Bangkok would have a truly grand
hotel befitting its status as the fast-growing capital of the
only country in Southeast Asia not to fall under colonial
rule. And the stately building, designed by an Italian
architectural firm, lived up to all expectations, from its
imposing facade overlooking the broad river to its lavishly
furnished interiors and its superb cuisine, prepared by a
chef with the engaging name of Georges Troisoeufs who
had formerly worked for the nearby French Legation.
