cultural and emotional sustenance, sustaining them long after their departure. In the mid 1960s Mrs. Fleming returned from New York to report to her charges in Lugano about a remarkable Broadway musical she had just seen. The school reception room at ancient Villa de Nobile was filled with her Thatcherlike presence, her arm raised with large gold bracelet, while making the salient point that we often must stop and see what were about, where we are going and that events out of our control might necessitate self-examination. She explained that she had just seen Stop The World I Want to Get Off in New York and that the title alone had inspired her. She suggested that we all thrust ourselves into lifes activities but always take time to examine them, their purpose, their fruitfulness, their worth to us and others, and that we should always sustain core values and principles. I recall Mrs. Flemings admonition, sage advice, especially to a New Yorker. I have not seen Stop The World I Want to Get Off but I hope the musicals narrative is as inspirational as the title and Mrs. Flemings interpretation of the story. It moved Mrs. Fleming half a century ago, it became a guiding thought for at least one of her charges. Like the protagonist in the play, who seeks fulfillment with other women, realizing in the end that his wife has always been the true center of gravity in his life, New Yorkers and all of those individuals who identify with the citys tempo, might gravitate elsewhere, but their true center remains the indefatigable allure of a great city which demands no pedigree and offers boundless opportunity.
