The entrance hall announces the informal beauty of the
house and its setting, in a quintessential essay composed
of a perfectly, gently curved staircase with drawing room
just beyond, through an archway, with a view afar the
house across the lawn to the water, a perfect site fixing
in memory a thousand summers. It reminds one why
Greek temples were so meticulously sited; in this case,
the architect and designer, hand in hand, have achieved
an ideal. The Georgian details of the hall are given a
romantic intonation by the Gothic clock, a juxtaposition
of style familiar to the Georgian ideal.
