Yes, several, and for a variety of reasons. Lena Horne first and
foremost. Aside from being a great beauty, she exemplified high
elegance but was also soulful and surprisingly vulnerable. The
elegant descriptor applies
as well to Bobby Short.

best image from our session
was one taken within the
very first few minutes���the
second frame. This level of
emotional forthcoming has
been the case with most of
the great musicians���the
legends. Their feelings are
integral to their art and so it
is not necessary to mine for
emotional treasure. I am
also grateful to have been
Bobby Short
granted their generous trust.
I decided to shoot Robert Rauschenberg against one of his
Gluts, his sculptural wall pieces. I asked if I could look through
his closet. I found a leather jacket there with the very same
color and texture as the art. It is heavenly when this sort of
organic improvisation falls into place.
