the street and the pasture beyond it. The mirror at the
end of the bridge is a bit daunting, to say the least, so
I placed my desk in front of it, fortified the table with a
small collection of marble obelisks, and hung a Scottish
landscape painting by Frances Stoddart above it. The
combination of objects provides a focal point for the eye,
and given the fact that the enfilade stretching from the
fireplace to the end of the bridge is seventy feet long, a
focal point is very much needed!
Flexing my sense of self-control has led to a few problems,
however. Although my previous flat was significantly
smaller than this in the sheer number of square feet,
it actually offered significantly more hanging space on
