the last half of the 19th century and into the 20th. Sail lofts,
artist studios, fishing shacks and seaside cottages, once
familiar from Maine to the Carolinas are alive and well,
assumed into this house. Regrettably, this vein of shingle
style has been superceded by a more bulbous, steroidal
variety, with windows and doors more appropriate to the
International Style and rooflines often resembling errant
pagodas.
Rather than indiscriminately applying shingles to whatever
form, Greg has shown great discernment, judiciously
adhering to, indeed refining, a version of the original 19th
century vernacular forms. Nor has he been slavish to this
mantra, a large high-roofed outdoor porch protruding in
