Dallas and John did much to present collections to
promote understanding of earlier portions of the compelling
American national story and plurality of stories. It remains
for subsequent guardians to continue acquiring artifacts
and mounting exhibitions that reflect the ongoing kinetic
and indeed, often chaotic, yet exhilarating, American
chapters that ensue.
I don't remember the teepee when I visited shortly after
the museum was founded, but I know that I would like to
spend a night in it. Here the collective American mythos
begins: a point of origin, as simple as it is exalted. H
